Let me introduce myself. My name is Faizun Qomar. I am a teacher of English from Indonesia. For few years, I have been teaching English in elementary school, junior high school, senior high school and college.
During my time teaching in those different levels of education, I tried to explore various teaching methods and materials appropriate for each level. Therefore, it is valid if I now say that I have a sufficient set of methods to teach English. Having such sufficient set of teaching methods, I always enjoyed teaching English regardless the level of education.
However, during my time teaching in college, based on my informal surveys, I found that students' English skills are closely related to the basic English teaching and learning they have. The better the basic English teaching they have, the better their English skills in college. This finding led me to conclude that the most important level of English teaching and learning is one in junior high schools. Why not elementary schools? Because in Indonesia, English starts to be professionally taught in junior high schools not in elementary schools. In elementary schools English is just treated as 'an additional subject.' Having such conclusion in mind, I made a decision to focus my attention on teaching English in junior high school level.
Time flies. now I have become a junior high school English teacher. By the government, I am assigned to teach in a quite remote area in one of developing regencies in Indonesia. In fact, teaching English to junior high school students especially ones in remote area can be both enjoyable and frustrating, depending on our attitude toward the class. The students have very low learning motivation. Therefore, if we do nothing to attract them to learn and just expect the miracles to happen, then we must be frustrated all the time. However, if we are willing to work hard to find the appropriate techniques which can attract their attention so that their motivation improves, then the class will be very enjoyable.
Well, that is all about me. But wait, that's not enough. You haven't heard anything about my motivation to make this blog. Well, through this blog, I will share my knowledge about English teaching and learning in general and my experience about teaching English to students with low motivation in particular.
